Office of Technology Management (OTM) UCSF's Office Technology Management (OTM), an integral part of the Office of Research, is responsible for managing UCSF's intellectual property. As such, the OTM licenses UCSF inventions and software for public use and benefit, generates license income to support campus research and education, and works with UCSF inventors to build start-up biotech and medical device companies. Founded in 1996, the OTM licenses between 25 and 50 inventions each year and has helped launch over 30 start-ups. Prior to 1996, UCSF's intellectual property assests were managed by the Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) in UC's Office of the President. However under a decentralized initiative already in progress, all UCSF inventions that have been under OTT's management are being transferred to the campus OTM for management. When the transfer is complete, the OTM will be responsible for managing all UCSF intellectual property - past, present and future - which will total roughly 1,600 inventions increasing at the rate of about 150 new inventions/year. During this transition, the OTM's headcount will grow from 12 to 18 staff.
