Grants.gov and the NIH Easily Handle the June 1 Application Submission Date The NIH received over 4,000 grant applications electronically via Grants.gov in the June/July transition round. It was the largest transition to date and considered a significant milestone in the NIH’s eSubmisson program. Some funding agencies limit the number of applications one insitution can submit for consideration. In such cases, UCSF coordinates a campus review. For more information on the process and to review a list of 10 private funding agencies, please go to the Office of Research website. Upcoming deadline: Hellman Family Awards for Early-Career Faculty: UCSF Deadline 8/21. Please contact Joann Ang via email or call at 502-5213 for details. National Cancer Institute Central IRB (NCI CIRB) Initiative for Adult and Pediatric Human Research The Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) is pleased to announce that UCSF has negotiated an agreement with the NCI CIRB that now allows investigators to rely on the NCI CIRB for all Phase 3 Cooperative Group trials. Briefly, this means that UCSF PIs conducting these protocols will no longer have to rewrite the protocols but rather download them from the NCI CIRB Initiative website and request a Facilitated Review from the UCSF CHR. To take advantage of this process, the forms can be found on the HRPP website . A compliance program should be more than a binder on a shelf. It must be an ongoing process; a commitment by an organization to conduct business in an ethical manner and with integrity while keeping true to UCSF values. Compliance is about prevention, detection, collaboration, protection and accountability. What is the UCSF Compliance Program? UCSF Negotiates GlaxoSmithKline Master Material Agreement UCSF finalized a master material transfer agreement (MTA) with GlaxoSmithKline on July 27, 2006. This MTA may be used for selected compounds for the treatment of cancer. This master MTA is the result of the collective efforts of the Office of Sponsored Research (Industry Contracts Division) and the Office of Technology Management. Questions may be directed to Svetlana Lee, MTA Officer, via email or via phone at 353-4892. Disaster Recovery Planning for Research Programs The impact of Hurricane Katrina on academic research programs was a dramatic reminder of the potential for disruption from natural disasters to critical programs and research careers. The UCSF campus and Medical Center emergency preparedness programs will participate in a joint disaster drill exercise on November 15, 2006. Keeping up with the New eSubmission Form Packages The NIH has updated sections and components of the grant application forms. All new Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) will use the revised application form. And, over the next few months, the NIH will update existing FOAs that use the older forms to reference the new application. Regardless of receiving automated update notices via Grants.gov, it is best to go back to the FOA itself to download current application packages. ALERT: An Issue with Pure Edge Identified The section of the PureEdge form that allows attachments for: Additional Senior/Key Person Profiles, Biographical Sketches and Current/Pending Support are missing! Without this section, applications are limited to eight Senior Key Persons. The NIH will issue a notice in the NIH Guide for Grants & Contracts providing a workaround for applicants. Multiple Principal Investigators (PI) Update The Multiple PI option is on track to be available for nearly all research project grant opportunities starting with the February 1, 2007 receipt date. Updates will be posted to: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/multi_pi/index.htm Conflict of Interest News Articles Beginning July 9, 2006, Paul Jacobs of the San Jose Mercury News ran a series of articles about financial conflicts of interest.
