CALL FOR APPLICATION: NEW BRU

Partnership with the Office of Sponsored Research (POSR)

BACKGROUND

Three years ago, the Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) and the Immune Tolerance Network (ITN) partnered to create the first collaborative business research unit (BRU) at UCSF. OSR trained ITN staff and assigned signatory authority and FTE to the ITN. ITN provided space and their existing FTE in order to create this rapidly responsive and well trained staff to expedite work performed within OSR. This venture decreased the subcontracting process by sixty days.

CALL FOR APPLICATION

The University under the auspices of the Research Administration Board (RAB) is putting out a call for a second pilot BRU (POSR). The second organization will be awarded by a competitive process through the RAB. The RAB is asking that interested parties submit an application to Joyce Freedman, Office of Sponsored Research @ Box 0962 or by email no later than January 17, 2007.

The POSR must involve pre-award activities: grants and award application management, intellectual property review, industry relations support and may include specialized interests such as linkages to philanthropic fund raising.

CRITERIA FOR APPLICATION

There is no particular format or style for a POSR, RAB is interested in any idea that would make the partnership viable. There are a few specific criteria that must be met to be considered for the next unit.

  1. Units should not manage less than 100 active grants, contracts and/or subcontracts and not more than 350;

  2. Units must have an administrator who is willing to manage the POSR and be a liaison with the Office of Sponsored Research (OSR);

  3. Units must already have staff that are working in pre-award and will partner with new OSR staff;

  4. Units must have available space to house the new organization; this space must be contiguous;

  5. There must be a faculty member (school dean, department chairs, ORU director, etc.) sponsor for the POSR.

Competitive applications are encouraged from departments, ORUs, or academic units. Applications are due by January 17, 2007.
