THE INSTITUTIONAL ANIMAL CARE AND USE COMMITTEE (IACUC)

TRAINING

  • Any new user with <12 months of experience with the species they will be working with must attend a species-specific training class.
  • The IACUC may determine during their protocol review process the need for additional hands-on or similar training (e.g., observation by IACUC staff), and include any additional training requirement as a condition of IACUC approval of the protocol.

NOTE: Pre-registration is required for rodent classes though ‘stand-by ‘students can occasionally be accommodated. Class locations vary, please see online enrollment.

Rodent Basic Class Description

The specific content and degree of detail will vary depending on the knowledge, previous experience and expertise of the students in each class. Allow 2-2.5 hours per session for the basic mouse and rat training sessions.

Class Schedule and Online enrollment

Typical topics covered:

  • Assessing animal health and veterinary care
  • Microisolator techniques
  • Handling and restraint
  • Injection techniques practical
  • Discussion and demonstration of common anesthetic agents
  • Assessing depth of anesthesia
  • Discussion of common analgesic regimens and peri-operative monitoring
  • Discussion of survival surgery requirements and post-surgical care
  • Identification methods
  • Euthanasia
  • Safety, health and environmental considerations
  • Other specific issues as needed

Specialized techniques training

Specialized training is also provided on an appointment basis. Please send your training request to iacuc@ucsf.edu.

  • Blood collection
  • Intravenous injections
  • Oral dosing
  • Basic tissue handling and aseptic technique
  • Isoflurane anesthesia machine demonstration
