CONDITIONS OF USE

The UCSF HIPAA Research Training Module provided on this Web site is current through June 20, 2003. It is intended exclusively to train UCSF-affiliated research investigators and their research staff in the University's policies and procedures implementing the Health Care Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). It is not intended for use by members of the public, nor is it a substitute for advice or consultation with University administrators or Legal Counsel.

The contributors to this site have made every effort to provide information that is accurate, and complete as of the date of publication. However, in view of the rapid changes in HIPAA, as well as the possibility of human error, this site may contain technical inaccuracies, typographical or other errors. Questions regarding the information contained in this module should be directed to Sharon Friend, Director, Research Subjects Protection Program (sfriend@research.ucsf.edu or 476-1814) or University Legal Counsel. © 2003 The Regents of the University of California.   Which module(s) do I need to take?
I am a research investigator only Take a Research Module
I am a healthcare provider only Take the Provider Module
(UCSF HIPAA web site)
I am both a researcher and provider Take the Provider and a Research module
I only enter data or file medical records for research Take the PHI module

You do not need to take any other HIPAA modules.

How do I access these modules if I am off site or a UCSF affiliate?

If you are attempting to access any of the HIPAA training modules on the UCSF HIPAA website from a site outside of the UCSF system, you may be denied access. However, the Research modules are publicly available on the CHR website.

How is training tracked?

Individual departments are required to track the HIPAA training for their staff. The CHR does not track HIPAA training, though it does expect researchers to complete one of the HIPAA and Research training modules. You do not need to submit certificates of HIPAA training to the CHR.
