Exempt Certification

Research that qualifies for exempt certification must fit into one of the four federal exempt categories:

• If subject contact is involved, study is not exempt according to UCSF standards.
• May not include subject identifiers or links, unless public personalities or information or fits category 1, 2 or 3.
• Source of data or specimen is relevant.
• Even if it qualifies as exempt, it must be certified as such by the CHR.
• Allow 1 to 2 weeks for processing, though could be less if an emergent situation.
• Submit two copies.
• Note: Few studies qualify as exempt. If the CHR is uncertain, it will ask for expedited review
