INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH AT UCSF: OVERVIEW OF THE OFFICE OF RESEARCH:

The mission of the Office of Research at the University of California, San Francisco is to support and promote scientific research by UCSF investigators. This is accomplished by:

•  Providing specialized facilities.
•  Maintaining a safe research environment, both in the laboratory and in the clinical setting.
•  Assisting researchers in identifying and obtaining extramural funds.
•  Managing intellectual property.
•
Providing guidance and administrative oversight over all regulatory aspects of research operations, including conflict of interest, and the protection of human subjects and the welfare of animals used in research.

The Office of Research, in partnership with the research community, ensures adheres to high ethical standards in the conduct of research and must ensure that UCSF meets the federal, state, and municipal regulations required of biomedical institutions.

As a reflection of this mission, this Guide has been developed is to help new investigators navigate the complex research environment of UCSF, and provide a reference document for current UCSF researchers. Not only are there myriad federal regulations, state laws, UC and other institutional policies that govern biomedical research, UCSF has many campus sites (Parnassus, Mount Zion, Laurel Heights, Mission Bay, the Mission Center, Hunter’s Point, China Basin, and others). Further, investigators often have joint appointments with UCSF-affiliated institutions (the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, San Francisco General Hospital, the Gladstone Institute.

Although this Guide serves as a roadmap to investigators, it is not a definitive statement of UCSF policy. Other university policies and procedures that you should read include:

•  UCSF Campus Administrative Policies
•  UCSF Campus Code of Conduct
•  UCSF Faculty Handbook for Success
•
UC Faculty Handbook

You are not alone in your research efforts. The University provides many support services for its researchers. This Guide is intended to help you be successful in your research endeavors.
