REMOTE ACCESS TO LIBRARY SERVICES (GALEN, RAS, VPN)

• Methods of Remote Access
• Contacts for Services

GALEN is the digital library available though the UCSF campus library, the Kalmanovitz Library and the Center for Knowledge Management, located at the Parnassus campus. These digital resources include databases, electronic journals, and other online resources.

Remote access to most online library resources is restricted to UCSF personnel and students, which include:

•   UCSF Faculty, staff, residents, and postdocs
•   Clinical and emeritus faculty
•   Currently enrolled students

Methods of Remote Access:

If you need to access GALEN resources such as databases and electronic journals from off site, you need to choose the remote access method that best fits your needs:

•   Using only a non-UCSF Internet Service Provider (ISP):

The list of Library resources available to you using only a non-UCSF internet service provider is very limited. If you choose not to use one of the UCSF remote access options, you will only be able to access the Library's online catalog, the Melvyl (UC system wide) Catalog, and PubMed. However, access to online journals and the majority of databases will not be available.

•   Using an ISP and UCSFLink VPN:

The Virtual Private Network (VPN) component of UCSFLink is the preferred remote access option for UCSF. It can be used with cable modems and DSL. However, you must have a non-UCSF internet service provider (ISP) in order to use VPN. Although you pay for the ISP, the VPN software is provided free of charge to you once you have applied and received your UCSFLink VPN User ID.

To use UCSFLink VPN you must:
1. Subscribe to an independent ISP.
2. Apply for and receive a UCSFLink VPN User ID.
3. Then, download and install the UCSFLink VPN software once you have received your VPN User ID.

For information about downloading and installing the VPN client, go to http://its.ucsf.edu/information/network/vpn/ or contact ITS Customer Support itscs@its.ucsf.edu (415) 514-4100, option 2.

•   Using the UCSF Remote Access Service (RAS) and ITSA (email):

Using RAS and an ITSA account, UCSF personnel and students can dial-in to the UCSF Network. RAS users are not charged for the service, but only a San Francisco phone number is available. Users outside the San Francisco area code will have to pay long distance fees. In addition to RAS, UNIX accounts are also used for electronic mail (ITSA) and web services.

In order to use RAS, you must:

1. Establish an ITSA/Campus UNIX Account (free service)
2. Modify your computer to use RAS.

NOTE: The ITS website has detailed instructions for multiple computer systems. RAS is not available for Windows XP and Mac OS X.
